Overview:
GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION: 
Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator or designee, the Clinical Research Assistant is responsible for performing delegated tasks and procedures involving human subjects in support of  clinical research protocols. 
Responsibilities:
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Assist PI in development of protocol-specific tools to aid in study documentation
    • Assess eligibility of research subjects in accordance with the approved protocol and all applicable regulations including HIPAA
    • Obtain patient consent and Human Subject Committee approvals for minimal-risk studies as delegated by IRB-approved protocol
    • Collect, record, evaluate, update, and store/transport pertinent data and samples in relation to protocol
    • Track study enrollment and completion of milestones
    • Summarize research findings and prepare presentations
    • Perform literature searches
    • Schedule patient tests and/or interviews
    • Conduct patient telephone follow up
    • Stock, inventory, store, and order samples/supplies as needed to maintain appropriate operations
    • Review medical records and medical record abstractions for consistency and completeness
    • Comply with established policies, health and safety regulations and requirements, procedures, and department objectives

The Diabetes Care Center has an outstanding opportunity for a part-time (80% FTE Research Study Assistant.  The Diabetes Care Center conducts clinical research for both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.   The Research Study Assistant will work on a couple ongoing studies: a study called REPLACE which is looking at the use of a real time glucose sensor vs finger stick glucose in making insulin decisions and a study called LEXICON which is an adjunct hormone study in improving after meal blood glucose.  This position will download devices (eg. glucose meters, insulin infusion pumps and glucose sensors), assist in interviewing patients, process labs, as well as verify data and perform data entry.  

Duties & Responsibilities: 
  • An ability to prioritize, coordinate and perform multiple tasks in a fast-paced work environment 
  • Work with  principle investigators, coordinating center, and study coordinators to facilitate clinical research study implementation and completion. 
  • Conduct study visit functions when required by study coordinators. 
  • Prepare and refine study documents using Microsoft Word, Excel, PDF, and CSV files formats. 
  • Work with and understand electronic data capture systems including Medidata, InForm, and JAEB data collection system. 
  • Enter and access data in EMRs including: Epic, Mindscape, and Cerner (ORCA) 
  • Use diabetes device software to facilitate study visits and data collection including: Tidepool, Medtronic Carelink, Glucofacts, My Glucohealth, Dexcom Studio and My HealthPoint. 
  • Recruit and interface with patients in clinical research environment. 
  • Order, manage, and project needs for research supplies to ensure adequate availability for study operations.  Use electronic inventory systems provided by study sponsors including Covance, JAEB, and ICON. 
  • Complete, as necessary, study specific training including dry ice certification, Good Clinical Practices, Protecting Human Research Participants, EDC (electronic data capture) specific trainings, and other training as required by study needs. 
  • Collect, process, package, and ship study samples using lab and study equipment. 
  • Update and maintain research study schedules for both the research team and participants 
  • Schedule  study visits to comply with study protocol and PI and study coordinator availability. 
  • Excellent organization and communication skills (oral and written) are necessary to provide service – in person and on the phone – to research coordinators, office staff and research subjects. Must be able to work both independently and as a team player and to coordinate multiple tasks. Must possess ease with computing in Microsoft Windows environment, familiarity with the Microsoft Office Suite (particularly Word, Access and Excel) and additional tools of an electronic office (FAX, email, web browsing, etc.).

    Dr. Jonathan Lipton, a principal investigator in the Department of Neurology is seeking a full-time research assistant who will become an integral member of a small, friendly, and exciting laboratory. We study the basic biology of circadian rhythms and the importance of circadian timing to neurodevelopmental disorders. The laboratory uses multidisciplinary approaches that include: molecular biology, biochemistry, cell culture, cellular and animal imaging, and analysis of animal behavior to uncover novel fundamental concepts and new therapies.  For a motivated individual, there is certainly potential for the design of a semi-independent research project. This is an excellent opportunity for a candidate with an interest in a future career in biological and/or medical sciences.  Candidates should be self-motivated, organized, have strong analytical skills, excellent interpersonal skills, and a strong work ethic. An academic background in neurobiology or biology, mathematics, computer science, or engineering would be relevant, but not essential.     Essential Functions

    POSITION SUMMARY:
    Position assists investigators as coordinator of a basic to semi-complex clinical research

    Coordinate and perform work in support of several studies including the assessment and management of pain using virtual reality in adults and children who have suffered burn and trauma injuries. Perform varied support for Research Coordinators at Harborview Medical Center, working with the Department of Rehabilitation Psychology. 

    Under general supervision, perform varied support functions requiring knowledge and skills specific to the research process.  Serve as a contact with study participants who will be either hospital in-patient subjects or out-patient subjects.  Review and explain questionnaires with subjects.  Gather and compile data; assist in entering data.  Provide general support to research staff, and cover for Research Coordinators during periods of holidays and/or vacation.
