*Standard Summary
Principal contribution is the application of principles and knowledge relevant to the administration and support of the research project. Under limited direction, performs complex lab and/or research-related duties and tasks. Helps develop, design and conduct research projects according to plan, including planning new procedures, adapting existing procedures to the needs of the project, and making contributions to methodology. Collects, records and analyzes data. Conducts literature reviews. Participates in writing reports and manuscripts. Oversees the management of equipment and supplies. Ensures compliance with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives, and mandates. Trains and oversees the work of research support personnel. Responsibilities may include the following non-laboratory duties: transcribing and coding data; developing data collection instruments; presenting research findings at staff meetings, seminars, and scientific conferences; assisting with building databases; and recruiting and scheduling research subjects. Responsibilities may include the following laboratory duties: recognizing abnormal results and varying conditions or procedures to correct problems; setting up and performing experiments. May serve as a lead research specialist in smaller labs.

Some focus predominantly on basic or translational research (the "bench"), others focus predominantly on clinical research (the "bedside") and still others are involved in both realms. More than half of our faculty members are involved in some kind of research. Our faculty also holds 70 active research grants from both federal and non-federal sources, totaling more than $10.4 million. They have more than 200 protocols related to clinical research and more than 40 of their clinical trials are externally funded.
The Section of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is nationally recognized for both clinical and basic research and has major external and federal funding for its research program including awards from the National Institutes of Health and American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons. The Section conducts a broad range of both basic and clinical research, including: electrical trauma, tissue transplantation and regeneration, craniofacial bone biology and healing, acellular regenerative dermal matrix for breast reconstruction as well as wound healing and bioengineering.

Unit Job Summary
Research Specialist 2: Under direction of Raphael C. Lee, MD, ScD (Professor in the Department of Surgery) the incumbent is will assume responsibility for performing and teaching sophisticated and complex laboratory techniques, oversee the day-to-day operation of the laboratory, including radiotracer imaging , biochemical techniques and laboratory animal techniques. The incumbent will be centrally involved in the study of synthetic chaperones for treatment of electrical trauma to nerve and muscle determining the optimum signal to induce spinal reflexes without causing tissue damage. When required represent the PI, help maintain database and perform statistical analyses of research data.
25%: Oversees the day-to day operations of the laboratory
-Maintain meticulous laboratory records.
-Ensures laboratory compliance with all safety requirements
-Teaches laboratory techniques to personnel including medical students, post-doctoral fellows, and other technicians
-Orders laboratory supplies and equipment
25%: Image Acquisition and Analysis
-Operate miniature gamma camera for radioneucleotide tracer imaging;
-Operate MRI scanner to collect data for image analysis;
-Operate gamma camera for radionucleotide imaging.
-Perform digital processing techniques to analyze the MRI and gamma camera images.
-Prepares therapeutic agents for injection into laboratory animals, including computerized files
-Properly maintain computers and other sophisticated laboratory equipment.
-Maintains supply of radiopharmaceuticals
10%: Biochemical techniques
-Preparation of chemical agents used for experiments.
-Isolation and quantification of RNA, DNA, and protein
-Separate serum from blood for enzyme and protein analysis
-Immunohistochemistry
-Enzyme assays
40%: Laboratory animal techniques
-Obtain all ACUP protocol training
-Induced and maintain general anesthesia.
-Setup all intravenous catheters.
-Setup electrodes for ELF and WP electrical injury studies.
-Performs various experimental surgeries;
-Collects blood samples
-Performs euthanasia and necropsy of experimental animals
-Ensures compliance with grant and NIH guidelines regarding the humane treatment of animals

Education
Bachelor's degree in a field relevant to the research being conducted required.
Advanced degree in a field relevant to the research being conducted preferred.
