Research Support Assistant: Manages aspects of clinical trials including: screening, enrollment, study patient visits, subject follow-up, completion of the case report form, and adverse event reports. Completes study training and/or certifications per study requirements. Maintains accurate and complete documentation of signed informed consent, relevant IRB approvals, source documentation, Case Report Forms (CRF's), drug dispensing logs, electronic data entry, and study related communication. Plans and coordinates patient schedule for study procedures, return visits, and study treatment schedules. Ensures Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) are implemented and documented in accordance to study sponsor, primary investigator, and regulatory agency specifications. Prepares and maintains protocol submissions and revisions. Educates patients about study procedures to be performed, visit schedules, and what to report between and during visits, and potential side effects. Organizes and attends site visits from sponsors and other relevant study meetings. May recruit and interview potential study patients. May obtain, possess, and transport specimens to appropriate laboratory according to study requirements and established aseptic techniques. Works closely with Principal Investigators (PI), Co-investigators, other study personnel, and sponsoring agents. Interacts with regulatory agents, Institutional Review Board (IRB) personnel, patients, department staff, and hospital staff.  
Education
High school diploma or equivalent required. 

Bachelor's degree in a field relevant to the research being conducted preferred.

Advertised Summary Job DescriptionThe Research Assistant will primarily be responsible for conducting assessments on elderly participants and their family members. Many of these assessments will be conducted in each participant's home but some may be conducted in one of the clinics on campus. Several of these home visits will involve local travel (within the tri-state area) that will not require an overnight stay while other home visits will require long distance travel within the United States. Long distance visits may be more frequent on occasion. Travel expenses will be reimbursed according to university policy.

Training will be provided to ensure the Research Assistant has the essential skills for collecting measures on neuropsychological performance, blood pressure, timed gait, anthropometry, etc. Additionally, the Research Assistant will be responsible for collecting a blood sample on all study participants.

In addition to conducting assessment during home visits, the Research Assistant will also be responsible for:
1. conducting a series of follow-up telephone surveys on these study participants to assess their current health status in between their scheduled home visits.
2. conducting data entry and cleaning of data collection forms.
3. scheduling participants for home visits and phone assessments.
4. maintaining phone call and home visit tracking records and schedules.
5. recruiting additional research participants, preparing materials for recruitment and assisting with study mailings and other clerical duties including filing and xeroxing.
6. performing similar, project-related duties.

Aside from the long distance travel mentioned above, this is a part-time position (20hours/week) where the office work mentioned in the numbered list above will be conducted from the office here at Columbia University.

Occasionally, the Research Assistant may be asked to conduct phone calls after 5PM or on weekends from the office in order to locate participants who are not at home during regular business hours.

Primary responsibilities include: 

The University, Department of Psychiatry, Neuroimmune Interactions in Depression, Addiction, and Pain (NIDAP) lab, seeks a full-time Research Assistant to support psychoneuroimmunology and neuroimaging research. 

The primary activity of a Research Assistant (RA) is to support the academic research program in association with a faculty member and/or team. 

The successful candidate will work with members and users of the NIDAP lab, supporting development and implementation of molecular and structural neuroimaging projects focused on determining the role of neuroimmune interactions in co-morbidity of depression, addiction, and pain. The RA will assist with all aspects of projects, including ongoing projects and those under development. 

Duties will include assisting in development and implementation of protocols and analyses of biological, psychometric, and neuroimaging data. 

The ideal candidate will be a future oriented, with a bachelor's of science degree and a strong desire to enter graduate/professional school in neuroscience or a closely related field. As such, the ideal candidate will be highly motivated to assist with writing abstracts and potentially with manuscripts and grant proposals depending on the level of scientific knowledge and writing skills. They will be expected to support research in neuroradiology and other areas of psychoneuroimmunology research. 

Will have the opportunity to work with clinical and basic scientists from a range of disciplines including Psychology, Psychiatry, Neuroscience, Nuclear Medicine, Radiology, and related disciplines. Applicants are required to have a doctoral degree in medical physics, physics, bioengineering, chemistry, or related discipline. 

Experience in analysis of structural MRI, as well as fMRI, perfusion and permeability measurements, diffusion-weighted imaging, and diffusion-tensor-imaging is required. 
 
Organizational Requirements
Bachelor's degree in one of the basic sciences or relevant experience in lieu of education. No experience is required with a Bachelor's degree. General Knowledge of research fields.

  • The Department of Psychiatry's Division of Psychiatric Services Research is seeking a Clinical Research Specialist to work within the Behavioral Health Systems Improvement Collaborative located in Catonsville, MD.  This position is responsible for providing the highest technical expertise to research programs, studies and/or projects and overseeing clinical research activities.  The incumbent will have advanced preparation in the research and evaluation of behavioral health services and will have experience in clinical mental health or substance abuse care delivery, preferably within a public system or to underserved populations.



    This position requires approximately 30% travel in the Baltimore area and other in-state travel.



    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    • Perform and direct research studies and/or project(s); design and coordinate program evaluations and research projects for the Maryland Public Behavioral Health System. 
    • Oversee projects, analyze data, and provide consultation regarding evaluation and data analysis.
    • Develop, recommend, modify, and implement policies and procedures and/or methods for clinical research; develop protocol manuals and data collection instruments and training materials.
    • Perform clinical research activities including data collection, data entry, data verification, data analysis, compliance and clinical relevance of data.  Conduct library research and contributes to the preparation and writing of research findings for publication of journal articles and grant proposals.
    • Perform administrative duties such as providing training and guidance to students and other clinical staff.
    • Participate in the design of research studies.
    • May recruit and screen subjects for research studies.



    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    Bachelor’s degree in Sociology, Psychology, or related field.  Doctoral or Master's degree preferred.

    Three (3) years' experience in clinical research including two (2) years in mental health.

    Consideration may be given for a unique combination of education and experience.*



    * Bachelor’s degree in an unrelated field with at least 18 credits in a field related to the research of the clinic, or Bachelor’s degree in unrelated field with at least one year of experience in a field directly related to the research of the clinic. Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.



    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

    • Ability to understand and utilize scientific/medical terminology and research theory in both verbal and written communications.
    • Ability to take a lead role in performing and directing various advanced, routine, and maintenance procedures.
    • Perform independent projects and to serve as a consultant in area of technical specialty.
    • Ability to use measurable and verifiable information for making decisions or judgments.
    • Skill in statistical programming, interpretation and data analysis using statistical software as well as spreadsheet and database software applications.
    • Ability to apply knowledge of scientific theory and computer capability to design and recommend changes to methods for clinical research.
    • Ability to network with, and present information to key groups and individuals; ability to take scientific terminology and concepts and translate to lay persons in a meaningful way.
    • Ability to conduct library research and participate in the preparation of journal articles.
    • Identify appropriate analytic techniques for data analysis with minimal supervision.
    • Competence in statistical programming with quantitative data analysis systems such as SPSS, SAS, and qualitative research data analysis systems such as Atlas and NUDIST.
    • Knowledge regarding program evaluation, basic health care financing methodologies and behavioral health treatment modalities preferred.

DESCRIPTION

Under supervision, the incumbent will work as a Research Study Coordinator working with a diverse study population including individuals who have bipolar disorder and other severe mental illnesses and healthy comparison subjects. Duties and responsibilities include project development and design, establishing protocols for assessment, conducting diagnostic and clinical interviews, conducting neuropsychological assessments, overseeing recruitment, coordination of data entry, ensuring data quality, preparation of regulatory documents, and data analysis. The individual will also be responsible for scheduling and tracking participants over time and ensuring subject payment, playing a key role in efforts to retain study participants over the course of the longitudinal study. Incumbent should utilize extensive knowledge in the administration of the proposed assessment instruments and be responsible for training all new-hires on the various measures and rating scales; oversee the collection of biological specimens by study staff, coordinate these efforts with laboratory personnel, track completion of the assays and facilitate integration of the results into the study database. Responsible for maintaining and initializing equipment used in the study, including cell phones and actigraphy watches and cognitive testing equipment; interface with technical personnel to ensure that these devices are operating correctly and to coordinate the analysis and confidential transfer of results into the study database. Responsible for cross-study integration with related research projects, and use experience with brain imaging data analysis, biological specimen collection, genotyping, and statistical analysis to harmonize analyses between studies. Responsible for compiling reports on study progress and will work closely with the database manager to ensure accurate summaries. Manage lab operations, including purchasing, inventory, and communication with building management and IT support staff.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Theoretical knowledge in psychology or related field. Background and experience in the general field of psychology and mental illness.
  • Demonstrated experience working with mentally ill individuals, including those demonstrating psychotic and mood symptoms. Ability to demonstrate good clinical judgment.
  • Advanced skill in determining diagnosis from SCID and elicit information from participants to make diagnosis, if necessary.
  • Proven ability to research, design, and implement original, more effective strategies for conducting the day-to-day work of the laboratory. Ability to modify, vary, adapt, or improve upon standard procedures to meet the needs of the research projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify solutions, and with PI’s supervision, recommend and implement solutions
  • Strong demonstrated experience in the administration, scoring and training of neuropsychological tests and clinical rating scales, including the MATRICS and DKEFS cognitive batteries
  • Knowledge of various pharmaceuticals, particularly psychotropic medications. Experience in human subject recruitment and screening.
  • Thorough knowledge of IRB Standard Operating Policies and Procedures
