Research Assistant I - Psychiatry Research-1600215
Vanderbilt School of Medicine, Psychiatry Research, is accepting applications for our Research Assistant I. We are seeking a self-motivated individual with knowledge or interest in working in the Vanderbilt SENSE laboratory. In this role, you will work on behavioral and functional studies of social and emotional processing in children with and without autism. Our lab is interested in the behavioral, biological and neural bases of social cognition, social interaction, and stress responsivity. Research methods include neuropsychological measures, hormone assays, detailed behavioral coding and neuroimaging. Responsibilities include coordinating multiple lab projects, subject recruitment, performing psychosocial and neuropsychological assessments, conducting behavioral studies, and analyzing behavioral and brain imaging data.
The following include a list of roles and responsibilities:
- Perform psychosocial/neuropsychological assessments on children with and without autism spectrum disorder
- Subject recruitment
- Coordinating multiple lab projects
- Assist with imaging studies
- Conduct behavioral studies
- Assist and participate in intervention studies
- Perform data management. Enter data into REDCap, MS-Excel, MS-Word. Assist in designing forms for scientific data collection. Update data consistently. Assist in preparation of data for statistical analysis and graphic display. Assist investigators in preparing the data for presentations/publications.
- Assist investigator in submission of grants.
- Order and maintain inventory of supplies.
- Share responsibility for general tasks of daily activities of the research unit, including telephone services, photocopying, and filing.
Finally, the position starts in May 2015. A minimum two year commitment is required. Hourly pay range begins at $13.00 per hour and final pay will be commensurate with experience.
Key Functions and Expected Performances:
- Under supervision, run experiments, assays, and record results
- Read and follow experimental protocols (May include animal handling, tissue culture, etc.)
- Compile and communicate results to supervisor
- Follow University safety protocols (may include use of combustibles, radioactivity, toxic material, and/or carcinogenics)
- Perform calculations involving molarity, % solutions, and serial dilutions
- Prepare and operate equipment in experimental procedures
- May include blood gas analyzer, centrifuge, pH meter, spectrophotometer, autoclave, scintillation counter, electrophoresis unit, analytical balance, etc.
- Maintain and repair equipment according to manufacturer and university guidelines.
- Ensure laboratory is prepared for experiments
- Maintain inventories,
- Maintain sterile conditions as required
- Prepare reagents
- Clean equipment.

ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS:
- Bachelor Degree required; prefer degree in psychology, neuroscience or related area; Master’s Degree preferred.
- Prior research experience is a plus.
· Familiarity and general knowledge in the areas of neurodevelopmental disorders, neuropsychology or neuroscience is preferred.
· Experience and being comfortable interacting with children and adults is preferred
