Description


GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

The Research Assistant (RA) will support various research studies involving the analysis and evaluation of the impact of computerized clinical systems on the quality of patient care. Current projects underway include: 1. preparing for a symposium focusing on vulnerable populations and IT-enabled consumer engagement, 2. improving prescribing safety by redesigning medication CPOE (computerized prescriber order entry) to incorporate the medication indication in the prescription order, 3. improving inpatient care by facilitating more effective and safer use of EHRs in hospitals. This project aims to produce an enhanced and expanded web-based tool to allow organizations to test for EHR-induced unintended consequences or new errors. 

In addition, the RA will assist with team meetings, data collection, data analysis, and manuscript preparation. The position requires strong communication, organizational and analytical skills. The RA will support all activities associated with the execution of the research plan including Institutional Review Board (IRB) submissions, regular progress reports to the sponsor organization, and organizing communication with participants and project staff. The RA will use REDCap, Excel, Access and other data management software tools to assist with data collection and analysis. The RA's responsibilities will also include administrative tasks and literature searches.

In affiliation with the Division of General Internal Medicine and Primary Care (DGIM), the RA will have numerous voluntary opportunities for training and career development. DGIM holds medical seminars for RAs with review of clinical case studies and special topics, an RA journal club, a research skills and data management training series, and DGIM Research Day, an annual forum for RAs to showcase their contributions via oral and poster presentations and promote professional development through a career panel discussion.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

•Assist in building a database/catalog of respondents to assess healthcare delivery system stress at various regions and sites
•Utilize REDCap, Access and/or Excel to assist in data collection efforts, database development, and descriptive data analysis. (In-house REDCap and MS Access training is available.) 
•Assist with data collection, data analysis and system evaluation. 
•Assist with the preparation of formal research reports and manuscripts for publication in professional journals and presentation at national/international conferences.
•Help with the preparation of talks and presentation materials including PowerPoint slides, tables and graphs.
•Assist with grant progress reports and IRB submissions as needed.
•Photocopying, electronic mailing, sending mail, faxing, documenting project work, and other administrative duties as required. 
•Coordinate, organize and take minutes for team meetings and stakeholder sessions.


 

Qualifications


QUALIFICATIONS:

•Bachelor’s Degree and an interest in healthcare and the use of technology to support clinical care.
•Data management skills and competency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel and MS Access knowledge and EndNote preferred.
•Certification in the protection of human research subjects (can be obtained after hire)
•Experience with RedCap preferred
•Experience with MS Access preferred
•Experience with electronic health records preferred
•Familiarity with biostatistics concepts preferred.
