The University of Washington (UW) Department of Rehabilitation Medicine is a complex academic and clinical department in the School of Medicine and Affiliated Hospitals which includes the UW Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, Seattle Children’s, Northwest Hospital, Valley Medical, and the VA Puget Sound.  The Department offers four degree programs including entry-level degrees in Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Prosthetics & Orthotics and a PhD in Rehabilitation Science.  There are also extensive research programs within the Department with over $13 million in grants per year. 

The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine currently has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Study Assistant. 

Coordinate and perform work in support of several studies including the assessment and management of pain using virtual reality in adults and children who have suffered burn and trauma injuries. Perform varied support for Research Coordinators at Harborview Medical Center, working with the Department of Rehabilitation Psychology. 

Under general supervision, perform varied support functions requiring knowledge and skills specific to the research process.  Serve as a contact with study participants who will be either hospital in-patient subjects or out-patient subjects.  Review and explain questionnaires with subjects.  Gather and compile data; assist in entering data.  Provide general support to research staff, and cover for Research Coordinators during periods of holidays and/or vacation. 

Job Duties: 

  • Screen and consent prospective participants to determine eligibility according to research protocol entrance criteria. 
  • Explain purpose of research study and answer participants’ questions. 
  • Maintain adherence to research protocols and verify accuracy of research data collected for quality control. 
  • Administer psychological questionnaires and pain measurement/rating scales. 
  • Use virtual reality computer program and the relevant equipment with patients who have consented to participate in virtual reality pain control studies. 
  • Administer Stanford Hypnotic Clinical Scale. 
  • Maintain confidentiality of subject records. 
  • Collect, record, organize, and verify data for computer input. 
  • Create research database files.
  • REQUIREMENTS:
    Two years of college-level course work in a relevant academic area AND one year of appropriate experience OR equivalent education/experience. 


    Additional Requirements: 

  • Must be willing to work on weekends and week days as needed. 
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, specifically Excel, Word and Access. 
  • Experience with SPSS statistical package. 
  • Working knowledge and familiarity with office equipment (copy machine, fax machine, etc.). 
  • Attention to detail due to work with research data
  • DESIRED:
  • Bachelor's degree 
  • Previous work experience with patients in a hospital and with clinical patients. 
  • Experience administering psychological and pain measurements to adults and children. 
  • Familiarity with the Stanford Hypnotic Clinical Scale. 
  • Experience with virtual reality/Human Interface Technology Lab.

  • Condition of Employment:
  • Must be willing to work on weekends and week days as needed. 
  • Work hours will be on Fri, Sat, and Sun.  Generally normal business hours on Fri and Sat (8 hrs each day) and 4 hours on Sunday - but this may vary depending on patient population each weekend.
