The Department of Psychiatry's Division of Psychiatric Services Research is seeking a Clinical Research Specialist to work within the Behavioral Health Systems Improvement Collaborative located in Catonsville, MD. This position is responsible for providing the highest technical expertise to research programs, studies and/or projects and overseeing clinical research activities. The incumbent will have advanced preparation in the research and evaluation of behavioral health services and will have experience in clinical mental health or substance abuse care delivery, preferably within a public system or to underserved populations.
This position requires approximately 30% travel in the Baltimore area and other in-state travel.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Perform and direct research studies and/or project(s); design and coordinate program evaluations and research projects for the Maryland Public Behavioral Health System.
- Oversee projects, analyze data, and provide consultation regarding evaluation and data analysis.
- Develop, recommend, modify, and implement policies and procedures and/or methods for clinical research; develop protocol manuals and data collection instruments and training materials.
- Perform clinical research activities including data collection, data entry, data verification, data analysis, compliance and clinical relevance of data. Conduct library research and contributes to the preparation and writing of research findings for publication of journal articles and grant proposals.
- Perform administrative duties such as providing training and guidance to students and other clinical staff.
- Participate in the design of research studies.
- May recruit and screen subjects for research studies.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in Sociology, Psychology, or related field. Doctoral or Master's degree preferred.
Three (3) years' experience in clinical research including two (2) years in mental health.
Consideration may be given for a unique combination of education and experience.*
* Bachelor’s degree in an unrelated field with at least 18 credits in a field related to the research of the clinic, or Bachelor’s degree in unrelated field with at least one year of experience in a field directly related to the research of the clinic. Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to understand and utilize scientific/medical terminology and research theory in both verbal and written communications.
- Ability to take a lead role in performing and directing various advanced, routine, and maintenance procedures.
- Perform independent projects and to serve as a consultant in area of technical specialty.
- Ability to use measurable and verifiable information for making decisions or judgments.
- Skill in statistical programming, interpretation and data analysis using statistical software as well as spreadsheet and database software applications.
- Ability to apply knowledge of scientific theory and computer capability to design and recommend changes to methods for clinical research.
- Ability to network with, and present information to key groups and individuals; ability to take scientific terminology and concepts and translate to lay persons in a meaningful way.
- Ability to conduct library research and participate in the preparation of journal articles.
- Identify appropriate analytic techniques for data analysis with minimal supervision.
- Competence in statistical programming with quantitative data analysis systems such as SPSS, SAS, and qualitative research data analysis systems such as Atlas and NUDIST.
- Knowledge regarding program evaluation, basic health care financing methodologies and behavioral health treatment modalities preferred.
