Advertised Summary Job DescriptionThe Research Assistant will primarily be responsible for conducting assessments on elderly participants and their family members. Many of these assessments will be conducted in each participant's home but some may be conducted in one of the clinics on campus. Several of these home visits will involve local travel (within the tri-state area) that will not require an overnight stay while other home visits will require long distance travel within the United States. Long distance visits may be more frequent on occasion. Travel expenses will be reimbursed according to university policy.

Training will be provided to ensure the Research Assistant has the essential skills for collecting measures on neuropsychological performance, blood pressure, timed gait, anthropometry, etc. Additionally, the Research Assistant will be responsible for collecting a blood sample on all study participants.

In addition to conducting assessment during home visits, the Research Assistant will also be responsible for:
1. conducting a series of follow-up telephone surveys on these study participants to assess their current health status in between their scheduled home visits.
2. conducting data entry and cleaning of data collection forms.
3. scheduling participants for home visits and phone assessments.
4. maintaining phone call and home visit tracking records and schedules.
5. recruiting additional research participants, preparing materials for recruitment and assisting with study mailings and other clerical duties including filing and xeroxing.
6. performing similar, project-related duties.

Aside from the long distance travel mentioned above, this is a part-time position (20hours/week) where the office work mentioned in the numbered list above will be conducted from the office here at Columbia University.

Occasionally, the Research Assistant may be asked to conduct phone calls after 5PM or on weekends from the office in order to locate participants who are not at home during regular business hours.  
Minimum Qualifications for Grade

Requires a bachelor's degree and at least 1.5 years of related experience or equivalent in education, training and experience.

Excellent interpersonal skills and outstanding English-speaking skills are required due to limited auditory capabilities of these elderly study participants. Must also possess strong organizational skills. Experience administering informed consent, and conducting phone surveys and health-related assessments desired. Driver's license required and research experience and/or health background strongly preferred. Must be willing to travel (both local and long distance) and work flexible hours. Phlebotomy experience and certification is desired but willingness to undergo phlebotomy training and certification (provided by the university) is required. The Research Assistant will report directly to the Project Coordinator.
